Special Needs

The Meadowlane Park Association is building a partnership with the Autism Family Network, Down Syndrome Association, and the O.N.E Coalition to explore hosting private pool events that offer sensory-friendly hours for families with special needs members. We are planning complimentary events aimed at supporting these families and creating a friendly atmosphere in what could otherwise be an overwhelming setting filled with loud music and other noise.

INCLUSIVE POOL FUN!

Relax and enjoy family time in a more tranquil setting at Meadowlane Pool.

  • Complimentary Monthly Events for families with special needs
  • Sensory-Friendly Hours that allow guests to relax in the water without the music and commotion of peek pool hours.

“The idea of having Meadowlane pool, a community pool in Lincoln with inclusive hours for families of children with disabilities is very exciting. As a mother of a young child with Autism, I know just how critical Water safety is. Water safety is especially critical for autistic children who are at a higher risk of drowning. The drowning statistics are scary for many parents of children with disabilities. Drowning is the number one cause of death in autistic children and Autistic children are 160 times more likely to drown than their neurotypical peers. This gives me reason enough to support a pool in our community where our neurodivergent children can enjoy safe hours with less crowds, supervision from trained lifeguards, inclusive water safety instructions and proactive planning and safety strategies implemented by the pool.” – Kayla Muhleisen

Reduced price memberships

With rising financial strains on many households, affordable family activities, swimming lessons, and swimming team opportunities are needed. In response, Meadowlane Pool is seeking to provide subsidized swim lessons and opportunities for youth to join the Meadowlane Makos swim and dive team.

Programs for senior citizens

Meadowlane Pool is pleased to offer a discounted summer pass for senior citizens and schedule private lap swimming daily. Over the next three years, Meadowlane Pool hopes to offer aquatic fitness programs designed for seniors as well.

Family-focused community outreach

Meadowlane Pool helps to strengthen community ties and foster positive social interactions through partnerships with multiple women and children-focused support networks. Once reopened, the pool can host private parties for these groups, designed to provide resident mothers and their children with a safe and enjoyable evening, helping to alleviate feelings of isolation while encouraging connections among families.

“I am writing to express our strong support for the Meadowlane Park Association’s proposal.  Our program has a longstanding commitment to empowering women and families through recovery and holistic wellness. Access to recreational activities such as swimming plays a crucial role in promoting physical health, mental well-being, and community engagement for our program participants.

The proposed initiative at Meadowlane Pool aligns perfectly with our mission by offering a safe and enjoyable environment where our families can bond, exercise, and learn valuable life skills. The benefits of swimming extend beyond physical health, fostering social interaction, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment for both mothers and their children.”
